Yohimbe Products

Yohimbe

also known as Pausinystalia Yohimbe or Coynanthe Yohimbe, is a tall evergreen tree that grows throughout Western Africa.

The natives in this area have used Yohimbe for hundreds of years to enhance sexual prowess and also as an aphrodisiac. Yohimbe increases blood flow to the genitals of both men and women and may improve libido, heighten sensation, and increase stamina. The Yohimbe bark is thought to contain about 6% total alkaloids of which 10-15% is Yohimbine, an indole alkaloid that is classified as an alpha-2-adrenergic blocker.

The energizing effects of Yohimbe stem from its ability to increase blood flow to both male and female genitals. It is thought to stimulate the pelvic nerve ganglia which seems to be beneficial to men who experience erection problems. Yohimbine Hydrochloride, a prescription drug, is the only drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of impotence. Yohimbe boosts the adrenaline supply to nerve endings, which can quicken male sensual stimulation. It also stimulates chemical reactions in the body that may aid in psychogenic cases of impotence caused by fatigue, tension, and stress. Studies have shown it to be effective in restoring potency in diabetic and heart patients who suffer from impotency. Because it is an alpha-adrenoreceptor blocker, it reduces the effect that causes the constriction of blood vessels, which typically increases with age. Yohimbe increases production of norepinephrine which is essential in the formation of erections.

Yohimbe is also a short term MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitor and should not be taken with any food or drink containing tyramines (cheese, chocolate, beer, aged meats, nuts, etc.) and particularly not with amino acids tyrosine or phenylalanine. Blood pressure could rise as a result from the body not being able to remove tyramines from these foods. Those with medical conditions particularly hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, or taking medicines especially tranquilizers, anti-depressants, sedatives, antihistamines, amphetamines, or other stimulants such as caffeine should use caution while taking Yohimbe. Anyone with a heart condition, kidney disease, glaucoma, or history of gastric or duodenal ulcers should avoid this herb.

Some side effects of Yohimbe are: racing heart rate, irritability, nausea, headache, changes in blood pressure, anxiety, sweating, dizziness, visual disturbances, abdominal cramps, increased body temperature, and frequent urination. Since this herb can cause confusion and disorientation, it should not be taken while operating machinery, driving, or performing hazardous activities.
