Hormones |

While being rich in
Antioxidants and minerals beneficial to the body, many of the products at Herbal
Powers affect hormone health. Understanding and finding good information
on the beneficial properties of hormones is very difficult because it is
on the very cutting edge of science. Unlike the relatively
more straight forward Skeletal and Circulatory Systems, the Endocrine
system is very complicated, with much of its functioning seen both cause
and affects on other systems. |
|
The endocrine system is the
combination of hormone producing glands in the body. To understand the importance of hormone function, it may be necessary
for you to forget Biology 101 and any misgivings these systems are
separate from each other. In a strange way, the Endocrine
System's function can sound a lot like what you learned the Nervous
System's function does. |
|
|
Another major misconception from Biology 101 is that each hormone has a very specific purpose. For example, if you ask people what does testosterone do, many will only mention its sexual function in Men. Most are not aware of its pertinence in women. Nor do they ever mention its affects on other non-sexual functions in the body.
If you were completely unaware of these misconceptions, do not feel stupid! Keep in mind that current work on hormones mainly involves inter-disciplinary and highly specialized scientists, i.e. biochemists, neuro-chemists, bio-physiologists, chemo-neuro-pharmacologists, etc. |

How do Hormones Work?
All hormones are derivatives of cholesterol. They both act as
messengers for the nervous system and maintain and affect it. They do
not have straight forward cause and effect reactions in the body.
Instead, hormones work together with the systems of the body, Antioxidants, other proteins, and other hormones. In general,
they attach to a protein or amino acid and bind with receptors on cells
to affect DNA activity. Adding another level of importance and
complexity, your body regulates hormonal level with
hormones. |
|
Some hormones begin to decline
with age more dramatically than others. In particular, Steroidal/Gonadal
hormones begin to decline in both men and women in their late 20's.
Because hormones play a role in all the systems of the body, including
proper functioning of Antioxidants and cellular production, these
declines result in aging. Reasons for these declines are still
unclear.
What is clear, at least in most healthy middle-aged people, is that it does not result from body's inability to produce these hormones. Even in menopausal women whose ovaries no longer produce hormones, estrogen and testosterone can be created in other areas of the body (bone marrow, etc.). |
