Immune Resistance - Winter Health

What is the Flu?

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people are at high risk for serious flu complications, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, including pregnancy. Symptoms of flu include: fever (usually high), headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches. Gastro-intestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, are much more common among children than adults. Some of the complications caused by flu include bacterial pneumonia, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. Children may get sinus problems and ear infections. When dealing with winter colds and flu, there is a quick and natural alternative to the conventional medical approach.  Herbs such as Echinacea, Andrographis, and Elderberry stimulate natural defense mechanisms to relieve aching muscles, chills, fever, headache, cough, sinus congestion, sneezing and sore throat. These herbs support the multiple body systems involved with colds and flu.Colds and flu can reach epidemic proportions during the winter months. There are more than 95 million flu cases in the U.S. annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and more than 62 million cases of the common cold!   Herbal Powers helps by offering a full line of winter wellness products.

Sinuses Over 100 viruses have been identified that cause the common cold, with symptoms lasting from 4-10 days. The homeopathic remedies listed (see chart) can relieve sinus congestion and headache, runny nose, sneezing, and loss of smell and taste.

Immune System  Systemic manifestations of colds and flu include immune response symptoms such as fever, chills, and exhaustion.  Influenzinum, prepared from flu vaccine, stimulates natural defense mechanisms prior to, or in the early stages of exposure. Echinacea and Andrographis also support balanced immune response to speed recovery and minimize discomfort.

Throat  Traditional Throat Coat Tea alleviates throat symptoms, including redness, inflammation, soreness, dryness, burning, tickling, hoarseness and swollen glands.

Flu Vaccine  One way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine. Because there is a vaccine shortage this year, it is recommended that only those at high risk receive the shot. There are two types of vaccines: The "flu shot" -- an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus) that is given with a needle or the nasal-spray flu vaccine -- a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu. About two weeks after vaccination, antibodies that provide protection against influenza virus infection develop in the body.

Healthy Habits

There are also good health habits that can prevent the flu including:
*Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

*If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

*Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

*Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

*Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

*Boost your immune system with powerful foods and herbs that can support your winter wellness. Eat your fruits and veggies-skip the sugar. Get plenty of rest.
