Product Description

Cordyceps Standardized Extract (5% Adenosine)

Cordyceps is a Chinese mushroom used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for “lung protection” and “reproductive invigoration” as well as to balance the “Qi” – the fundamental “energy of life.” Herbal Powers deliver high levels of active chemical compounds found in the wild Cordyceps, including the Polysaccharides, Adenosine, Cordycepin and Cordycepic Acid. Most Cordyceps in the market contains 0.1% to 0.2% Adenosine. Herbal Powers' Cordyceps contains 5% Adenosine.

Benefits of Adenosine

Adenosine is a nucleotide that occurs naturally throughout the body as a neurotransmitter. Adenosine is a neuroprotective substance that protects cerebral nerves from damage caused by a lack of oxygen (hypoxia) or of blood, such as occurs during a stroke. Adenosine also has a direct relaxing effect on vascular smooth muscle and it decreases the excitability of nerves. Caffeine blocks adenosine and interferes with calming action it has on the brain. Adenosine has been under extensive research since1987, there were more than 20,000 papers on the actions of adenosine published.

Adenosine increases in our cells when stressful conditions occur that lower the energy level of cells. In a condition with low oxygen, adenosine levels in the body would increase sharply. That activates the adenosine receptors which regulate various functions of the body including the tone of smooth muscles, the function of blood platelets, kidney function, cardiac rate, white blood cell function, sedation, neurotransmitter release, and the breakdown of fats.

In the body, the enzyme adenosine deaminase controls adenosine. It performs functions involving blood pressure, neurotransmission, and platelet aggregation. The enzyme can be found in cells of both the small and large blood vessels, and it is inhibited by some members of a large class of plant chemicals known as flavonoids. It is under research that flavonoid-rich plants could “amplify” the action of adenosine in the body.

Benefits of Cordyceps Adenosine:

  • Cordyceps improves management of low oxygen and high energy demands i.e. increased hypoxia and acidosis tolerance
  • Significantly increases aerobic fitness and anaerobic thresholds
  • Reduces submaximal heart rate and blood lactate
  • Enhances fat metabolism, sparing muscle glycogen
  • Increases cellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
  • Enables peak oxygen uptake and reduces oxygen consumption.
  • Boosts libido and sexual function
  • Improves athletic performance

Scientific Research for Cordyceps:

A few animal studies have shown cordyceps feeding to increase the ratio of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to inorganic phosphate (Pi) in the liver by 45-55% - an effect that may be viewed as beneficial in terms of energy state and potential for performance enhancement. Furthermore, mice fed cordyceps and subjected to an extreme low oxygen environment, were able to utilize oxygen more efficiently (30-50% increase), better tolerate acidosis and hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and live 2-3 times longer than a control group. A number of Chinese clinical studies, primarily in elderly patients with fatigue, cordyceps-treated patients reported significant improvements in their level of fatigue, ability to tolerate cold temperatures, memory and cognitive capacity and sex drive. A small study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine annual meeting (1999), showed that a cordyceps-based supplement significantly increases maximal oxygen uptake and anaerobic threshold, which may lead to improved exercise capacity and resistance to fatigue.

Herbal Powers Cordyceps 5% Adenosine comes in a 10g jar.
